OK, kids, here it is. We are opening a "beginner" league for the spring and summer. The idea is to give folks a chance to play at a slower pace to get more puck touches, and not be behind the play so much. The rink is going to have some programs starting at 7:10, so the first game will be 8:20 pm, and the second (if we get 4 teams) at 9:30 pm. If the demand is such that we need another slot, we would probably use the 7:10 one. The plan is for two 11 week seasons, the 1st one runs from from April 4 to Jun 13. The second is from Jun 20 to Sep 5, not playing July 4th. Cost is $180 for skaters, $90 for goalies. It's bring your own jersey, but will have a ref and scorekeeper. It'll be 3 11 minute periods, and 13 skaters per team, sorted by draft similar to OHL and HWHL. Sign ups will probably begin Monday, Feb. 26. What did I leave out? Comments? Thanks, Jeff

Who will determine which league a skater is eligible to skate in? Will there be tryouts? Will some players get kicked out of the OHL? Also, here's my two cents. It sounded like a lot of people who posted were interested in a legacy league. I realize the decision has already been made, but the rink already runs three leagues that are of the exact same format why not try something new?

I think with this league we have everything covered. We have the afterburners for the fast paced folks, the OHL for the middle grounders, and the.... whatever wednesday will be called, for the newer player.
I don't think they will pull or cut folks from OHL, you can probably do both.

I think gulp, Quinn is right. The league will balance themselves out. Then maybe some of the upper level OHLers, like Quinn, can turn it loose a little and then lower level players who arent comfortable with the level can play on Wed. I think mostly brand new people will play Wed.

As a newer player I think this is a great idea. While trying to learn it stinks to skate to the blue line only to have the puck taken away every time. The OHL has been a blast but it would be great to be able to gain experience against people of the same talent ( or lack of talent) level. One thought would be to have someone that truly understands the game on the bench to explain to the players what they should be doing.

I'm your huckleberry.
I will play both leagues, I am totally over rated in the OHL and I have a friend that is completely new to hockey that wants to start playing but not in a league that he will be run over in.
Patberg, you can mind my net anyday! BOMBERS NEVER SAY DIE!

One of the many things that has made adult hockey so successful at Space City is letting the players decide who is playing where. The Afterburners in the OHL are definitely playing at the right level to keep things fun, but still competitive. I expect we will need some higher level OHL'ers in the Wednesday night (Space City Novice League, or SCNL?) to keep things moving as well as fill the rosters. I am going to continue to "run" the adult hockey programs, but also keep looking to interested people for the day to day help, like OHL Captains, or, hopefully, coaches for the SCNL. The only reason anyone has been excluded from any of our leagues has been unacceptable behavior, on or off the ice.
